In my opinion Young Brown does go for a walk which leads him into the finding that the government and as much of everyone in the town are all communicating with the devil. He doesn't only find that out but the knowing that his wife also lied to him which concludes the story of him losing faith. Even though it wasn't intentionally he still considered it as being unfaithful to him and leading him into something else. Hawthorne communicates the tone by emphasizing some words in the beginning like "he walks through the bushes.." and the way the author also foreshadowed the events that wee going to happen when he saw a women's shadow.
