Central message of the book?

In my opinion the central message of the Great Gatsby is that the American Dream doesn't bring the happiness you want in love or your desires. For example in the Great Gatsby we see that Gatsby is in love with Daisy before he goes to war but after he comes back for a 5 years everything has changed. He wants to impress her with money which he can't at any point. On the other hand we see that Daisy and Tom " love" each other but what are they really? How is it that they seem to be happy but not be in love?
